Digital Heist of the Century Hits Binance as North Korean Hackers Strike

2 min read Start reading

In what is being described as the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, an elite North Korean hacking unit managed to siphon approximately 6.36 billion dollars from Binance wallets across ten different blockchains. The brazen attack occurred on October 29, 2026, with the bulk of the funds vanishing in a lightning fast twenty minute window. While Binance quickly moved to suspend withdrawals on several networks and assured customers that user funds remain safe, the sheer scale of the breach dwarfs previous records, including the 1.5 billion dollar Bybit heist seen early last year.

Security experts at TRM have attributed the operation to TraderTraitor, North Korea’s premier state sponsored hacking group. According to investigators, the attackers spent days meticulously preparing for the strike, using privacy tools like Tornado Cash and conducting rehearsals on test wallets before launching their assault. The hackers utilized a sophisticated method involving compromised signing infrastructure and a specific Ethereum protocol update to essentially hijack Binance hot wallets, turning them into sweepers that funneled billions toward attacker controlled addresses.

The fallout has sparked a desperate race between global financial entities and the hackers to freeze the stolen loot. Major stablecoin issuers including Tether and Circle, along with Ripple and World Liberty Financial, successfully locked down about 2.67 billion dollars in assets. Additionally, those managing Arbitrum were able to secure another 2.7 billion dollars worth of ETH and ARB tokens. Despite these efforts, the thieves acted quickly by swapping assets through market makers and leveraging lending protocols like Aave to move funds beyond reach.

As it stands, the attackers are believed to be holding over 420 thousand ETH and more than 18 thousand BTC, totaling roughly 2.4 billion dollars in untraceable assets. This latest event highlights a growing trend of highly coordinated attacks targeting major exchanges via systemic vulnerabilities in hot wallet management. For now, international authorities continue to track the movement of these coins while Binance works to shore up its defenses following this unprecedented blow to digital asset security.
